What even is an Adventure Session?

Adventure Session Basics.

An adventure session is a pretty simple yet beautiful idea. Our goal in offering adventure sessions is to allow those who may want an adventure elopement experience but don’t want to compromise on the wedding they dreamed of with their family and friends. You can have your cake and eat it too, you CAN do both and the results are spectacular. It’s time to explore nature. It’s time to find a grand landmark. Some examples of locations are national parks, state parks, waterfalls, viewpoints etc. It’s a time to wind down from the excitement of your wedding and relax together while we capture amazing photo and video.

Usually an Adventure session is attached to a wedding day, though not always (they can also be anniversary, engagement or stand alone couples sessions). The images add to your already amazing wedding gallery and the video we capture will be included in your wedding film. The raw beauty and romance embraces the love you have and allows you to walk away with crazy cool images.

Why do an Adventure Session?

Is the idea an elopement something that lures you in. Going off to explore some exotic location? Do you love the images of a couple elegantly dressed for their wedding day standing in the middle of the wild? Those two elements contrast each other so much and create a beauty like no other. There’s opportunities to explore places that you don’t have time to or are not close enough to visit on the wedding day. Adding an Adventure session to your wedding coverage gives you an opportunity to have the tradition of a full wedding day while also embracing your wilder side. They are also great markers for an anniversary or special session in an amazing location.

When is the best time?

These type of sessions often times get called a “day after session” which is not always the case. Most often our Adventure sessions are tied to a wedding day. They DO NOT have to be the next day, they can be weeks even months from your wedding day. Anniversary or other couples sessions can be scheduled whenever we coordinate. Usually destination wedding sessions are the the day or two surrounding the wedding day while we’re in that location. Local wedding sessions have a little more flexibility.

Here are some different scenarios I’ve shot adventure sessions:

  • Couple has destination wedding and we meet back up the day or two after to explore the beauty of their location. Check out a film

  • Local wedding with an adventure session after they return home from their honeymoon. Film Link

  • The dreaded rainy wedding day….. Unfortunately rain happens and the dreams of having beautiful outdoor images from your wedding day can’t happen. We’ll meet you after somewhere amazing and make dreams come true. Film link

  • Couple has local wedding and goes to an amazing exotic location, we’ll meet you there for a session!

  • Bride and Groom have amazing wedding day with their family and friends but don’t have room in their timeline to explore. The day after makes this perfect. Gallery Link

What should I expect?

It’s not typical. Many people may ask “why would you do that?” “wont you get your dress dirty?” “you’re getting up at what time?” Sometimes people just don’t understand how you get such amazing images.

  • It does take a little dedication. More or less depending on when/where we decide to go.

  • Typically brides wear their wedding dress and grooms are in a suit (or whatever their wedding attire was). The location access depends a lot on where you should get dressed. Some spots allow for easy access and it’s fine to arrive in your attire. If we decide on a more remote spot, then changing there is usually the best bet. I typically encourage couples to wear something light and easy to slip on your dress/suit over or we’ll also find a private place near our destination.

  • Wearing solid shoes is a must if we’ll be hiking or on less than stable ground. Many times your shoes aren’t seen very much so wearing more comfortable shoes is a great option. Bringing your wedding shoes along so they can be worn for some pics is a potential option too. Weather and climate will play into exactly what to wear.

I want to stress that I have experience with Adventure sessions all over….from Hawaii to Banff to Alabama to Rhode Island. EACH one is different and each one is catered to each couple. I will go hard wherever you have in mind to go. You won’t “out adventure” me, I can almost guarantee you. It does take a little determination on your part but it’s 100% worth it in the end. This will be something that will stick with you the rest of your life and you’ll have breathtaking images to always remember.

How do we make this happen?

Most times these sessions are added on to a wedding package or booked independently for anniversary or couples sessions. Each session is FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE to your schedule and preferences. I have extensive travel experience and can make recommendations on locations no matter what region you have in mind. Typically we will plan for sunrise or sunset as our target time. Depending on the location and access will determine start time and travel needs.

Let’s start the discussion. Do you have a place you love? Let’s go there. Do you want to explore somewhere new? I’ll document that journey.

Let’s go!
